Toy-Twilight 2016

Toy-Twilight 2016

This art piece posits that a toy’s dual nature as a real-world object that stimulates imagination qualifies it to be
aproxy for the subjective experience of creating/experiencing art.

As if it were just another function of the toy-sized infrastructure, the lens of a camera placed under a loop of
train track records the toy train circling above. This line of raw data streaming into the lens is bisected by the
processed data flowing out of the projector and onto a movie screen. Shining a light through these two axes
adds the shadow of the toy train, and creates a loop with no beginning and no end, but with structure. This
structure - material toy train, its image of light, and its shadow - suggests a contemporary narrative of
aspiration from lowly infrastructure to weightless projection, as well as an artist icone: The duality at the heart
of aestheticl anguage is portrayed in the material, real-world inspiration and its two contradictory projections,
the trinity converging and separating one time every cycle, in the generative ritual of play.
